Azure AD dirsync stopped

Dirsync had been working well for us. 

On Monday morning, we received notification that WAAD had not registered a synchronisation attempt in the last 24 hours.

We're still in pilot, so it's not a major or urgent issue.  The sync still hasn't taken place, and it now says that the last sync was 84 hours ago.

We set the sync up using the wizard, and I'd like to understand why it might have stopped - is it a configuration mistake? How can we troubleshoot this please?
